Let's dive in with the idea of the "effortless" look. It is a rare breed of woman that truly exudes effortless style. No matter what they wear they always look stylish. It's a covetable trait, one part instinct, one part attitude in equal measure. But let's be real. No one really wakes up like this.
Becoming a mother, I've stopped having time for virtually everything. My life is a blur from the moment I wake to the moment I crash, and what I once considered basic maintenance, like getting a manicure, got bumped way down on the priority list. Although I have to say that bare nails are chic and evidence of a woman with a lot of important things going on. See how I did that? Sometimes you gotta fake it till you make it! I'm going to keep pushing that one until it sinks in :P
Clothing projects both inwardly and out. Your look can empower you, comfort you or make you feel put together, even when (or, especially when) things seem to be falling apart.
This got me thinking about my years of experience working with clothes, and I decided to put a little how-to for myself. A dressing refresher course, if you will, for those harrowing moments in front of my closet, double espresso in hand and feeling like I can't wear one more hat that day.
Here we go...
1. Clothes are transformative.
Those are words I live by. There's a reason phrases like "power suit" exist. Fashion is about being evocative. When I am sick or not feeling great I make sure to wear things that make feel beautiful, and in turn, I feel better. I'm not saying it clears my sinuses but I do get a little spring in my step.
2. Know yourself.
If there is a secret to pulling off a look is making sure you feel like your best self in it. If you're not comfortable (let me be clear, I don't mean comfy, beauty is pain, deal!) you're not confident, and it is all about confidence.
3. When in doubt, find a muse.
If there are women whose style you admire, google, Instagram or Pinterest your way to inspiration. I find that more often than not, she already reflects a hint of your style sensibility. You probably already own a piece or two in your closet that will help you emulate their look.
4. Have a go to uniform.
Choose a signature look that can help you get dressed in a flash. It may change seasonally, and that's fine. reinvention is fun and a necessary part of the evolution of your style.
5. Balance is essential to creating interest.
Offset the obvious by mixing unlikely pairings. It's a nod to your wit and ability to show your depth of character in your look.
